if i recall, a wt question from readers a year or two ago suggested that voting was a ``matter of consicience.
" i have also heard that this was pubished only ``for public consumption,"" and that the verbal ``network'' emanating from the governing body and proceeding down the pipeline via the district and circuit overseers to the locals was that they should get the word out that nothing had really changed and that voting was actionable by a judicial committee.
so... my questions are: is this all accurate?
I remember having a conversation with my sis and her hubbie right after that QFR was published. They were told by the brothers in a talk at the KH that voting was still not acceptable and that the article was published for the sake of the brothers living in countries where a person would be killed for not voting. Also they said that those countries where they had to vote or be killed the brothers were expected to vote neither 'yes' or 'no' and still could maintain neutrality. Of course, anyone with a smidgin of a conscience would be thinking about what happened in Malawi with the party card...people died, IMHO, needlessly. 'Yes-no-abstain' are all principles of democracy. Many of these 'vote or die' countries are not democracies. Either you are a citizen of that country or not. The Malawiian party card was not a choice of 'yes-no-abstain.' I was offended by that WT article on voting and feel it is an outright lie.

just curious here..... if you left the "truth" when you still had children living at home, what was their reaction to your leaving?.
did they leave too?.
did they want to remain jws?.
Our oldest had just gotten her driver's license a few months prior to our cold turkey leaving. She continued to drive herself to meetings for a while...until she got tired of the people asking her where mom and dad were. The youngest quit with us but continued dropping in with her grandmother occasionally, just to remind herself why she didn't want to go anymore. Neither were baptized. The youngest has moved on, found a comfortable place spiritually. The older has not defined her belief system yet and continues to be angry at anything resembling religion, especially everything associated with WT. We no longer discuss religious or spiritual matters when she is present. She feels the most betrayed by the Borg. She was the center of attention most of the time, an ideal unbaptised publisher, outgoing, every body's friend. When she stopped attending meetings she found how shallow her friendships within the organization really were. There were no pleas from her JW friends to come back, or even why did any of us stop coming to meetings. We left cold turkey, her JW 'friends' judged her just as quickly. I think initially both children felt uncomfortable and worried about salvation (what if Armageddon comes?) but over time have learned WT theology was not gospel truth.

so, what ridiculous rules have been imposed on you guys?
i had my jw father tell me that green shirts were rebellious, and an elder said that star wars was demonic, just to give a couple of examples.......
Mulan,
The congregation where your mom and step dad served in the 60s and early 70s was very strict. Of course, there were few young ones (few under the age of 50). Leisure suits were a no-no. Graduation parties - did not happen, in fact it was rare that any of us graduated...get out of high school as soon as possible so you could join the ranks of the pioneers. Music-only Kingdom melodies. My dad told us he would let us pierce our ears (one hole in each) if we would let him do it with an awl (think he was truly serious). I received an anonymous letter from a, ahem, well meaning sister, after I wore, in her opinion, a low cut dress to play piano for a KH wedding. Funny thing, you know how strict my dad was, he didn't see it as being low cut. Mustaches on brothers were not permitted. White shirts for the brothers. Dancing? didn't exist. What did we do for fun? we didn't...no such thing as fun - the end was coming! get out there and preach the kingdom. No one celebrated anniversaries. When I was 18 I moved to the south Seattle area and was shocked when I saw brothers on the platform wearing leisure suits. They had pizza parties. The kids went roller skating. They had softball games. It was a different world.

has anyone seen "white oleander", with michelle pfeifer?.
the previews looked really good.
I can usually get my hands on the books before I can get to a movie theater. The closest movie house is an hour away for me so I only get to see big screen movies a few times a year. There is a little grocery store in the closest town that has video rentals but they don't always keep up with the new releases. You all are so right, the movie is usually a disappointment. Good idea to see the movie first, then read the book. Wish I had the luxury.

hey everyone!!
i need to know if anyone has any ideas for me as to where i can find contract work, such as clerical work to do from home.
i currently hate my job, and i've only been here for 3 weeks, it's a long story, but to sum it up, they mislead me on my job description and the role i play.... with that in mind, it occured to me that i'm sick and tired of the constant office politics, feeling of someone looking over my shoulder, and the hectic lifestyle that comes with being a working mommy.
Be careful with some of the 'work at home' internet places. You shouldn't have to pay any upfront money for set up. And check with the Better Business Bureau before giving out any personal information. Working from home would be so cool!

The book is a good, but odd read, especially since I work for a mental health clinic. We see a lot of foster kids. A couple of folks from the office have seen the movie and read the book. They were not disappointed.

i've noticed that this is the first holiday season for many here on the board.
that means there's gonna be some pretty sad xmas trees this year .
so my question is does anyone have any great holiday craft ideas????
Ven,
I have lots of stamp art ideas for ornaments. Paper clay, stamps, ink and paint with a little wire...really pretty and you can add sparkles too. Paper beads with wire make nice garlands. And I just saw some really cute 'snow men' that look like marshmallows, think they would be easy to make as long as no one has a big appetite for marshmallows (not a problem for me, only like my marshmallows on fire).

is it just me, or did someone die around here?
the board seems to have taken a huge dumper.
a knaves religion is always the rottenest thing about him.
I've been out of town away from the internet for most of the past week and a half. I also avoid flame wars, unless I'm the one starting it. And lately I just haven't had much to say (which can be a very good thing - I usually have way too much to say ).

a little advise if possible.. i do suffer on and off from depression and am at present engaging in a warfare to overcome these problems, as unfortunately i have become bogged down with negativity again.. have any of you here used medication prescribed by your gp and if so, was it effective for you?
also, did you suffer any side effects from the use of the medication?.
i am interested as my gp has offered to put me on a course of anti-depressants, but to say i am fearful, is to understate how i feel about the use of prescribed drugs.
A friend of mine just started med therapy for her depression. It's the newer version of Effexor, I'll have to find out the name. She told me this morning that she feels so much better. She is an incest survivor and has been treated for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the past. She has been experiencing a major depressive episode for almost a year and went back to her MD to get some help. I'm so glad to see her feeling better. If change diet/exercise doesn't help meds are something worth looking in to.
